T565: An Assessment of MOA Gapless Surge Arresters for Severe Conditions on HVDC System Applications - PHASE I

An examination of the electrical stresses which may be imposed upon metal oxide surge arresters in a DC converter station is undertaken by means of simulation of the DC system and associated AC systems in the time domain using a digital computer program. Detailed models of a DC link were developed for temporary overvoltage stresses and steep front stresses. The most critical stresses for each type of DC station arresters due to converter faults and converter malfunctions are identified.

This report examines the effects of Statis Var Compensation (SVC) systems on Voltage Flicker from Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). Fully instrumented tests were carried out an Ultra High Power (UHP) electric arc furnace with and without Static Var Compensation at a steel plant.
