5005: Validating NDE Tools for Evaluating Present Condition, Residual Strength and Remaining Life of In-service Wood Poles

The effectiveness of eight different inspection tools were evaluated through field inspection of 60 distribution size wood poles ranging in age from 2 years to 54 years. The conventional inspection method was evaluated as well. The results of these inspections were compared with results obtained from destructive tests, and the serviceability of the poles was assessed. The eight inspection tools that were tested measured one or more parameters related to condition, strength and/or remaining life.
