T512: Forecasting of Damaging Lightning Strokes By Radar Observations

The objective of the report was to determine the feasibility of forecasting in real-time the location of lightning from observations of thunderstorms with radar. The study was performed with historical lightning, outage and radar data. Correlations between several characteristics of the lightning flash revealed that strong flashes are generally rare and closest to the radar echo. 3715A: Minimum Separation Between Underground Pipelines and Electric Utility Grounding Systems - Specification and Modeling

Utility grounding systems (e.g., transmission line footings, substation ground grids, distribution pole grounds) must be offset from buried pipelines to avoid damage due to arcing.
