The objective of this project is to provide utilities with strategies for managing their investment when faced with an impending wave of end-of-life assets. These strategies need to work within the context of the electric utilities’ overall asset investment requirements in new investment, replacement, repair, maintenance, enhancement, or refurbishment.

Strategies for Managing the Wave of Approaching Asset End-of-Life

A user-friendly personal computer program, TRANSIZE Version 2.0, has been developed to aid utility staff in selecting the most economic distribution transformer sizes and optimal transformer loading. The program calculates transformer life expectancy, internal temperature, and lifetime cost, based on inputs describing the loading, ambient temperature, and economic conditions. It also generates the cost-of-losses formula for purchasing specifications. A novel probabilistic approach has been used in TRANSIZE to extend conventional calculation methods and to account for the time varying nature of input parameters. This results in more realistic estimates of transformer life and cost.
The TRANSIZE program offers a comprehensive technical method as an alternative to the numerous approximations presently employed to select transformers. TRANSIZE may be used as a design or operations tool. It assesses the impact of emergency and cold temperature loading, and allows the user to perform "what-if" calculations. Planned transformer loading using TRANSIZE will lower costs, increase energy efficiency, and help obtain the optimum usage of distribution transformers. The program operates on IBM XT, AT or compatible computers, and has simple menus and on-screen instructions. This report serves primarily as the user's manual for TRANSIZE, however, theoretical background on the calculations is also provided. Recommendations are provided for the use of the program, and on future developments that would allow TRANSIZE to predict load profiles based on the number and type of customers connected to the transformer.
