D718A: Application of Fault Current Diverters to Mitigation of Faults in Underground Vaults

An investigation has been undertaken into fault current diversion methods for reducing the hazards associated with utility staff working in vaults with cables and splices. Fault current diversion is a novel protection approach which utilizes a high speed cable spiker to safely shunt the fault current to ground and to collapse the dangerous arc. U598: Development & Testing of a New "High Efficiency"Kool-Fire Heat Pump

Ontario Hydro Research Division, participating in a co-funded project with the Canadian Electrical Association and Kool-Fire Limited, measured the laboratory and field performance of an experimental residential burner-assisted heat pump built by the Kool-Fire company. The model developed and tested in this work represented a departure from the manufacturer's regular line of burner-assisted products.

G245: Evaluation of an Electrolyser Under Variable Electrical Input

The behaviour of a 3 kW (250 A) electrolyzer has been established under a constant current close to 250 A and variable input. The following parameters have been recorded or evaluated: the voltage drop for each cell, the total voltage for the five cells, the dc input current to the electrolyzer, the temperature of the cells, the quantity of hydrogen generated and the hydrogen content in oxygen.

G346: Improved Combustion Technique for N0x Reduction and Alkali Injection for S02 Reduction in Utility Boilers

The principle objectives of this study were to determine the effect of a C-E Low NOx Concentric Firing System (LNCFS), overfire air and other windbox parameters on NOx formation in the furnace. SO2 capture by alkali components inherent to the ash and by directly injected alkali sorbents was also investigated. The rates of ash deposition were monitored during the course of the entire test program. The results of this study are presented and interpretations of the data are made.

D65: Bolted Aluminum-To-Aluminum Connectors of High Ampacity

The effect of current cycling on the contact load, resistance, and temperature of bolted aluminium-aluminium joints of high ampacity has been studied. A new accelerated current cycling test has been proposed. The test is based on the passage of relatively high currents for short periods of time followed by a longer cooling time.

D162: Microwave Plasma Destruction of Toxic Wastes

The purpose of this program was to determine the "destruction efficiencies and maximum possible throughputs of PCB-containing liquids in the 15-kW microwave plasma reactor system. In order to do this, three subsystems had to be developed (feeding, effluent handling, and sampling) beyond the existing state of technology. These tasks were much more difficult than had been anticipated and consumed far more time and effort than expected. Solutions were obtained for all the engineering problems.
