0407: Evaluation of the Shallow Water Ice Profiling Sonar for Measuring Frazil Ice

The Shallow Water Ice Profiling Sonar (SWIP) is an upward looking sonar that was designed for studying river ice, specifically designed to investigate suspended frazil ice, formation of ice pans and seasonal ice cover.The objectives of this project were to expand and improve the measurement capabilities of the SWIP for the measurement of frazile ice through laboratory testing of the correlation between between the amplitude of the backscatter acoustic pulses and the frazil ice concentration.
