G658: A Critical Examination of Turbine Passage Fish Mortality Estimates

Two years of fish passage research was conducted in a tube-type turbine. Juvenile Atlantic Salmon, brook trout, alewife and yellow perch were the test species. This purpose of this study is to examine how experimental protocol influence fish passage mortality estimates. The overall objective was to develop new knowledge to better assess past and future fish passage problems associated with hydroelectric turbines.

G339: Fish Diversionary Techniques for Hydroelectric Turbine Intakes

A number of fish screens are described and evaluated in terms of their potential for removing fish from hydroelectric turbine intakes. Six fish diversionary techniques are identified as practical or promising. Both physical barrier screens and behavioural barriers are discussed. Fish screening at hydroelectric intakes in Canada is reviewed and areas for future Canadian research identified.

G261: Fish Mortality in Francis Turbines

Experiments were conducted with fingering brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) at a relatively small, high speed, Francis-type turbine operating under a rated head of 118 m. An extensive analysis of types of injuries relative to fish length, gate opening and to air venting in the draft tube is presented. Results are discussed with regard to the sources of fish injury, turbine operating parameters and in relation to other Francis turbines in Canada.
