U629: Investigation of Electro-Osmosis and its Applications

This report is a State-of-the-Art study of electro-osmosis, viewed primarily as a means of dewatering porous materials. The focus of the study is the energy consumption of electroosmosis relative to that of competing mechanical and thermal technologies. Over 100 references are cited, from which quantitative data were taken to estimate relative energy consumption. The report includes theoretical and historical treatments of the phenomenon, and recommendations for future research.
