3347: Optimum Design Return Period of Overhead Lines Considering Line Failure Costs –A Guide for Utility Engineers

A simple optimization model is presented for a radial line configuration to compute the optimum return period. The optimization is done by balancing the initial line cost against the present value of the cost of losses due to line failures. The failure cost consists of two components: (1) expected cost of line replacement and (2) the expected cost of energy not supplied.
