Aeolian vibration of overhead transmission conductors can lead to fatigue damage. The fatigue damage is evident by broken strands at the suspension clamp of the conductor. Field vibration recorders are used to indicate the stresses that result in fatigue damage by measuring the bending amplitude at the conductor’s suspension clamp. The use of vibration recorders to measure aeolian vibration on overhead conductors in the field on all‐metallic suspension clamps has been performed since the 1960’s. The methodology for taking field vibration measurements on metal‐to‐metal clamps is very well defined and has been standardized by the industry. Armor Grip Suspension (AGS) clamps with helical rod attachments have also been used on transmission lines for many years, but their use is not as widespread as metal‐to‐metal clamps.
