3243: Corrosion Assessment of Below Grade Transmission Line Steel
A large percentage of transmission lines in existence today have exceeded or are reaching their 50 year design life. The below ground foundations are subject to corrosion, and as their condition is difficult to assess, they are often neglected because of the lack of inspection techniques. Visual inspection by excavation is the predominant method used by utilities; however, this process is labor intensive, costly and is only practical if the corrosion is limited to a small depth below ground
