G230: Acid and Caustic Excursions During Normal Boiler Operation

Details of boiler water excursions due to ingress of sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid from the makeup water demineralizer system were obtained from a survey of utilities in Canada and the United States. Plant modifications made to prevent these incidents from recurring have been documented and recommendations for changes in the design of new and existing plants are given. Potential corrosive effects of these chemicals, obtained from the literature and an experimental program, were evaluated.
