G85: Development Of An On-Line Monitoring System For the Detection of Deposits on Generating Station Boiler Tube Surfaces Volume I and II

A device and technique has been developed for monitoring the onset and rate of growth of slag, ash, or other sintered particulate deposits on the walls and tube banks of large coal and lignite-fired generating station boilers. The device incorporates "fouled" and "clean" heat flux meters combined through special electronic circuitry to give an electrical output signal which represents the degree of fouling (and consequent loss of potential heat transfer) on the surface.

This study evaluates the suitability of calcium chloride solution as a thawing agent for frozen coal. Particular attention is paid to risk this agent might cause corrosion in railcars, coal handling equipment and boilers. Also, its potential for enhancing slagging and fouling in boilers was investigated.
