The objective of this project was to develop and improve an inexpensive side-grooved pre-cracked Charpy-V-notch technique for measuring the fracture toughness of material at crack initiation. Critical values of the J-integral were determined at different temperatures and different rates of loading.

G431: An Assessment of Air Flow Measurement Techniques Applicable to Utility Boilers

The objectives of this study were to establish the sources of recurring problems with the measurement of air flow to utility boilers, and to provide basic information on existing and developing conventional and unconventional methods of air flow measurement. The information gathered in this study will be used in the preparation of a CEA standard for air flow measurement to be used by utilities and boiler and instrument suppliers as a common basis for design and bidding.

G580: Utility Use of Pressure Mode With Two- Shift Operation For Heat Rate Improvement

Fossil fired units in Canada will probably be required to operate on cycling or two shift duty. Variable pressure operation (VPO) can offer many advantages under these circumstances. Knowledge of experiences of U.S. and Canadian utilities was derived from interviews and literature to identify possible areas of concern. A cost benefit analysis of the benefits of VPO for a typical operating scenario is included and a methodology for implementing VPO-two-shifting identified.

G108: Hydrogen Permeation Barriers for Nuclear Reactor Materials

The report summarizes results of the use of coatings as a hydrogen permeation barrier on a nuclear reactor. Two classes of base material were considered - exothermic hydrogen absorbers and endothermic hydrogen absorbers. Both gas phase and electrochemical permeation techniques were used to determine hydrogen permeabilities through coatings and base materials.

G816: Assessment of the Nitrous Oxide Formation in Power Plant Plumes - Phases II and III

CANMET, Environment Canada and the Canadian Electricity Association have jointly undertaken an assessment of the potential for N2O formation in power plant plumes. In October 1991, a Phase I report was issued. Phase I assessed the current understanding of N2O emissions from combustion sources, N2O formation and destruction mechanisms and N2O analysis techniques with emphasis on power plant plumes.

G195: ASH AS A POTENTIAL RESOURCE

Collected data indicate that by 1986 over 5.0 million tonnes of ash will be produced from coal combustion by Canadian utilities. Because only 15% of this ash is currently utilized, the study is directed towards the development of strategies to promote the marketing of ash to reduce the costs and environmental impact of disposal.

G179: Development of A Retofit Low Nox Burner

To reduce N0x emissions from its Nanticoke GS, Ontario Hydro conceived a series of burner modifications to convert the existing conventional circular coal burners to staged combustion burners. This report outlines, in detail, the design and function of these burner changes; manufacture; installation and the subsequent testing program. Test results are presented and analysed.
