0363: CPF: Quantifying the Non-Energy Benefits of Hydropower

North American hydro power owners have historically been competing in a world of relatively inexpensive carbon-fuelled electricity from coal and gas. New U.S. energy policies on the licensing and operation of hydro plants have been increasingly trading energy and ancillary benefits of hydro for non-energy benefits including difficult-to-monetize benefits for endangered species and fish passage. Many small hydro projects have non-energy benefit costs that exceed the value of the energy generated.

The Shallow Water Ice Profiling Sonar (SWIP) is an upward looking sonar that was designed for studying river ice, specifically designed to investigate suspended frazil ice, formation of ice pans and seasonal ice cover.The objectives of this project were to expand and improve the measurement capabilities of the SWIP for the measurement of frazile ice through laboratory testing of the correlation between between the amplitude of the backscatter acoustic pulses and the frazil ice concentration.

0206: Static Ice Loads On Hydro-Electric Structures - Summary Report, Ice Load Design Guide, and Ice Load Prediction Computer Program

A ten-year project was undertaken in which field programs were conducted over a nine-year period from 1991-92 to 1999-00 to: (a) measure the loads in the ice sheet near the dam; (b) measure the load distribution between a gate and pier, and: (c) compare the loads on wooden and steel stoplogs.
